A Gaslighting Primer - what is it, what does it sound like, how do you deal with it.
I found this old video today! It's a good simple explanation of gaslighting, so I thought you might find it helpful. (SHARE IT with friends who need it!🧡) Gaslighting is something we talk about a lot when discussing narcissists, Hijackals, and toxic relationships. It's an insidious form of emotional abuse that wears you down and causes you to become confused about your own sanity.
This short video explains it in easy terms, with some examples of what you might hear or feel, so you can be more aware of it when it's happening to you.
* * Remember, narcissists and other toxic people come in all genders and ages * *
and toxic relationships can be at home, at work, at play... with your parent, boss, spouse, sibling, friend, co-worker.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am Dr. Rhoberta Shaler, The Relationship Help Doctor.
Are you in relationship with a Hijackal? That's someone who consistently puts you down, love-bombs and gaslights you, creates confusion and chaos, and causes you to second-guess yourself? I can help you recognize, understand, and make decisions about those kinds of narcissistic behavior…and especially, how to keep yourself (and your children) safe and sane.
No worries about where in the world you live. I work through private, secure video conferencing. So, we can certainly work together to figure a few things out.
Переглядів 9754 місяці тому
Parental alienation is real. It's a calculated and intentional tactic used by narcissistic toxic people to manipulate you. Here's a 2019 interview I did with coach Nikki Bruno. We dive into steps you can take when you realize you are being purposefully and strategically alienated from your kids by your Hijackal (ex)partner. My guest, Coach Nikki Bruno, had that experience, and she fought back.....
    Men and woman don’t fit together anymore! Both are tired of working paying bills have no time to relax have no time to have FUN! War lined up so the pressure is simply too much. Men blame women and women blame men for their bad relationships. Expectations to high bring it down man! Society over sexualised to much of everting!
    Two quotes are appropriate to this: "A liar has to have a good memory" and the flip side - Oscar Wilde said "always tell the truth, that way you don't have to remember anything". Another issue mentioned is the stories 'a few degrees off from truth' a half lie is much harder to disprove that a total lie.
    I'm married to one of these. The only thing we can talk about without it devolving into a circular tug of war over nothing is our 7 cats. We can't even talk about food half the time without it devolving into some type of "debate"....And everything is always my fault. He blames me for his own past behavior on the many ruined vacations, rewriting history to say that I did the very things HE did.
    Thank you so much for this eye-opening episode! I have learned over the years to detach from my narcissist adult son. He has really hurt me over the years, but as I've prayed and grown in my faith, I am learning that their actions have nothing to do with me, and it's not my fault for their problems.
    My husband and i are both the youngest in our family and people pleasers. My dad and his dad was always strict and controlling. My mom and his mom was pushy, especially his mom. Since moving out to live with me, he has been able to say no more to his family/mom and she gets even pushier.
      As for me I moved far away from my family because I tend to run away so they won’t contact me. Sometimes they still do when they really want something but being at a distance helps to say no. I’ve gotten better at this. My husband still has difficulty saying no at work though and always caves to what his boss wants
    Laura doesn't know how to separate her own issues from a constructive conversation. She mentions admitting and taking ownership over and over. While this may have merit on the overall topic of why we let people affect us, on this particular topic of "how to get people out of your head", I found this counter-productive as she's basically blaming the victim for the toxicity of other people or the allowance of toxicity to affect us, and that's just not how most relationships work. I'm sorry but I didn't find this video helpful, and I gave it a thumbs down.
    My narcissist older sister used the silent treatment on my a 300-mile road trip I took with her. I felt the energy as soon as I got in the car. When asked her about it of course she says nothing is wrong, nothing at all. But all the way there and back she hardly spoke a word. I later found out it was because she jealous that I was taking a trip outside the country. I never knew she was jealous of me . Oddly enough I looked up to her. Always tried to please her. So very sad!
    Enmeshment between my ex husband and his parents and siblings destroyed our marriage. Divorced and have more peace in being able to have autonomy and boundaries. Their enmeshment led to him abusing our Children and I on the advice and encouragement of his family members and then he had the audacity after physically, psychologically and Emotionally abusing us, he claimed that I was abusing him because I said no and set boundaries. I could never win no matter what I did. Glad to be away from that cesspit of dysfunction. He is so scared to be disowned that he refuses to assert himself. He abused and abandoned our family for his parents and siblings. It's so sick
    That is such a mental illness to me idc what anyone says that is deceitful the most deceitful DELUDED SICK in a way I don’t understand - wouldn’t CARE to - would LOVE to but DON’T want wish or care to - evil. I think it’s the first time I wrote that word 🤷🏻‍♂️. Evil. These people have children. ! Sin of the world. Seem to be All over. Can’t wrap my mind around it. No truth. As Jordan Peterson said, (not that I’m a fan) - it’s ’anti truth’. There’s literally something wrong w their minds - souls - no heart so we DON’T HAVE TO WORRY BOUT THAT .. Viscious ly cruel demons. Never used those words either. They could care less about anything. Not gonna say anymore heaven forbid someone misconstrues someone’s ‘feelings’
    What my experience has been with narcissistic people in general, they’re not family orientated, they rather be with strangers and a bad crowd. So they have followers, and they have even more control because of all the people that are very similar to their own personalities at all but a majority of them are just like them. I guess that’s why they call them flying monkeys. Do you know my family tell me so many times they don’t like me because they think I’m a goody two shoes. Cause I’m all about natural health And well-being. I love nature I’m against polluting the environment. I love animals, especially birds and dogs in my favorites. So they have actually told me your two goody goody. And that’s the reason they don’t want to be around me. They like to drink, take drugs, hang out with the wrong people manipulate lie sneak. And that is the truth. At least that’s what I have experienced with most narcissist. They are truly corrupt do you like the gangs that pick on innocent people because they nothing but bullies. And some of them just go to far very abusive.
    My older sister is very good at THE SILENT TREATMENT. The clearest memory I have of her in her our childhood was one day something happened in her experience that she felt empowered to make herself scarce. She had disappeared all day and into the early evening then she was getting hungry and need to use the bathroom, so she suddenly appeared. She had crawled up to the roof and hid behind the fireplace stack. We called out for her and were very concerned about her, but she heard and saw us trying to find her. She was really enjoying all the activity going on, but we were extremely upset by her antics. I am 82 yrs old and 7 yrs ago I finally caught her in one of her antics, and immediately decided to ignore her hurtful expression toward me, and caught her in a full blown tantrum. It was in that moment I figured out what she was up to, and she knew it. Thank you, for this amazing information!💓💓💓
    I've been yelled repeatedly and then told to stop screaming or why are you screaming? when I respond. Which always hurt or upset me, which I realize is them trying to get the attention away from their bad behaviors/words. The added hurt is also because they know im always afraid to be misunderstood. Which im realizing they play off that fear. The hard part is emotional detaching when it's your family. But im trying.
